College Honors

Northwood University

Darren H. Butler, son of Michael and Sherri Butler of Mansfield, received his bachelor of business administration in advertising marketing and management Magna Cum Laude from Northwood University in Cedar Hill.

Darren was also the recipient of these awards: Faculty Achievement Advertising, Evelyn Lambert Award, 2008 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and the Dean’s List.

Darren graduated from the first class of Summit High School in 2003.

Texas State University

Texas State University-San Marcos announces that Melissa L. Morogiello of Mansfield earned Dean’s List recognition for excellent academic performance for the Spring 2008 semester.

Texas State students must complete 12 semester hours and earn a minimum GPA of 3.5 to be recognized for the Dean’s List.

Dallas Baptist University

Patti LaDonna Butler of Mansfield, graduating with a master of arts in management degree, was among the 640 graduates receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees from Dallas Baptist University at spring commencement.

Of those graduating, 416 received bachelor’s degrees and 224 earned master’s degrees.

The student’s daughter is Kassi. Her parents are James and Edna Payne of Cleburne.

Crystal Marie Demarais of Mansfield, graduating with a bachelor of science degree, was among the 640 graduates receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees from Dallas Baptist University at spring commencement.

Of those graduating, 416 received bachelor’s degrees and 224 earned master’s degrees.

The student’s father is Roderick Demarais.

Austin College

Sherman — Austin College celebrated commencement of its 159th academic year May 18 for approximately 340 bachelor of arts candidates from the Class of 2008 and 20 master of arts in teaching candidates.

The Honorable Antonio "Tony" Garza, Jr., U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, presented the commencement address to approximately 4,400 people in attendance on the Clyde L. Hall Graduation Court on Austin College’s campus.

Axel Nze Akoue of Libreville, Gabon, was selected by his classmates to serve as senior speaker at commencement. Akoue said that he and fellow classmates learned about service and global vision, a broad world view that was evident in his classmates electing him to speak and in the Class of 2008 $51,000 gift to the college, the largest gift by a graduating class in college history, to form a scholarship for international students.

"We’re about to go into a world that needs us, a world that will learn from us the concepts of global vision and service to others," Akoue said. "These are the things that will come to define us. This is the Austin College difference."

Students received their diplomas from Austin College President Oscar C. Page, with recognition of those who earned Latin honors are based on cumulative grade point averages including the spring term. Those designated Summa Cum Laude have earned a grade point average of 3.85 or higher on a 4.0 scale, Magna Cum Laude, 3.70 to 3.84, and Cum Laude, 3.5 to 3.69.

The graduates with the two highest academic records in the class, selected by faculty, were awarded scholarship medals. Laura Ellington received the J.C. Kidd Scholarship Medal, and Will Radke was awarded the J.M. Robinson Scholarship.

Garza and Stuart Baskin, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Tyler, and 2008 baccalaureate speaker, each received honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Austin College during Commencement.

Amanda Lishel Austin, daughter of John Austin of Mansfield, received a degree in psychology/minor in religion. Laura Alison Westedage of Mansfield, daughter of Walker and Mikel Westedage, received a degree in religion/minor in art.

Texas A&M University

Sigma Alpha Lambda is proud to announce that Tierney N. Peterson of Mansfield has recently become recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at the Texas A&M University. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.

Stephen F. Austin State University

Nacogdoches — Students named on the attached list are Dean’s List honorees for the spring semester at Stephen F. Austin State University.

To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and maintain a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Local students making the list were Kelsey Janelle Marsh of Mansfield, majoring in communication-radio/TV; and Stephanie Lynn Prentice, majoring in health science.

Stephen F. Austin State University

Nacogdoches — The following students have been named to the President’s Honor Roll at Stephen F. Austin State University for the spring semester.

To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and maintain a grade point average of 4.0.

Local students making the President’s Honor Roll were Brittani Jordan Cirinna, majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies; and Jamie Noel Folk, majoring in biology.

Waco — Chase Milburn of Mansfield earned a place on the Dean’s Honor Roll for the 2008 spring semester at Texas State Technical College Waco.

Milburn, a student in welding technology, is among those with a scholastic achievement of 3.5 to 3.9 grade point average for the semester.

Texas State Technical College, the only state-supported technical college system in Texas, offers specialized, hands-on instructional courses at campuses in Harlingen, Marshall, Waco and West Texas.
