Vopal says that the Super Saturdays program “worked at the last school district I worked at,” and he thought that it would be a good program to implement here. “It helped the kids who needed the extra help,” said Vopal.
Senior Symone Moody agrees.
“It’s a good way to get freshmen prepared,” Moody said.
Others disagree about her sentiments.
“I’d rather sit in a room and daydream,” said Michael Cocke, a junior. “I hope it passes the time.”
“I’m going to hope that it’ll pass the time,” said Jaley Henderson.
“It’s a lot more exciting sitting in Saturday school,” Moody said.
Super Saturday is a program where students in Saturday school or looking for extra help studying for the TAKS test can come and review math, science and social studies skills.
Students from any high school in Mansfield can attend. This program continues from last year, also with the enticement of free breakfast and the hope of winning prizes.
“It’s a proven fact that if you feed the kids breakfast, you get better results,” Vopal said.
The prizes given out so far include gift cards. Last year, donors gave a TV and several electronics to be raffled off.
“It really comes down to community support. The more we get, the more prizes we can offer,” Vopal said.
The more important thing that they’re doing, though, is helping the kids.
“All I’m interested in doing is improving test scores. Whatever I can do to help the kids is my job,” Vopal said. “If we can get parents to support this, that helps a lot. The kids that are here want to be here. When you do something you want to do, you’re going to do a better job on it.”
“People just don’t understand how busy we are. I’m just glad we can do it to support the kids,” Vopal said.
Moody summed it up, “It’s a good program.”
